Frequently asked questions

Is xOverland a replacement radio, or software? Software. It's the home-screen launcher that runs on an aftermarket Android head unit in your Silverado. Your factory features still work underneath it.

Does it work without plugging anything in? Yes. The home screen, maps, music controls, weather, the app drawer, and the assistant interface all work on their own (maps and weather use the internet). Connecting an OBD-II adapter, the head unit's CAN wire, a Carlinkit dongle, or a Bluetooth light controller simply lights up more live data and control — the guide's requirements table shows exactly what each one adds.

What's the difference between the XRoad tab, the XDirt tab, and the drive modes? The XRoad tab is street navigation; the XDirt tab is the off-road cockpit. The drive modes (OnRoad / XRoad / XTow / XSport) are gauge-and-map profiles you switch between for the activity you're doing — they don't change which tab you're on.

Will it show made-up numbers if my adapter isn't connected? No. Anything that needs hardware reads "—" or tells you it's waiting to connect. xOverland never invents vehicle data.

Can I use my phone's CarPlay? Yes, wirelessly, through the XLink tab with a Carlinkit adapter — and xOverland folds your phone's now-playing right into the dock so music controls stay consistent across the whole system.

Is it safe to use while driving? It's designed for it: big fat-finger controls, glanceable gauges, spoken alerts, and safety lock-outs (for example, you can't type a new destination while the truck is moving). It also reads important warnings out loud so you can keep your eyes on the road.
